Following the Trump administration's "zero tolerance" immigration policy that separated nearly 2,000 children from their families at the US-Mexico border, the CBP revealed that the "majority" of the minors are now living in "licensed facilities" after being separated from their parents.
"The vast majority of children in our care have been separated from their parents for illegally crossing the border or having no legal basis for remaining in the United States," said a CBP statement. "As soon as these families are referred to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), they are transferred to HHS-licensed facilities."
As part of its statement, the CBP also provided new figures on the number of detained minors. On July 26, it said 1,847 children were detained, but on August 10, it said the number increased to 2,047. The CBP acknowledged that 1,049 minors were found to be "ineligible to remain in the United States," and were "administratively transferred" to HHS.
The CBP statement included quotes from Texas Border Patrol Chief Carla Provost and El Paso Sector Chief Rodolfo Karisch.
"The numbers don't lie," Provost said. "When we do our job to protect our borders and enforce our laws, it's not something we take lightly."
As for Karisch, he said that, "the facility in which the children are held is of the highest standard, with an on-site medical clinic, dedicated facilities for minors and adults, staff trained in the unique needs of children, and care provided for the safety and well-being of the children and families in our custody."
The CBP statement, however, did not explain what happens to the children after they are transferred to HHS.
Under federal law, when children are separated from their parents, they are held in custody for no longer than 72 hours, and are then placed in a "licensed facility" with the Office of Refugee Resettlement.
